Haresdown Barn
Haresdown Barn was not only a challenging project due to its size (over 5,000 sq. ft), but also because of the condition and remoteness of the building. Grade II listed, the barn was in a very poor state of repair while the nearest access road was over half a mile away, across ploughed fields. We had to provide 1,500 tons of aggregate to create a finished driveway.
What’s more, the services were 500 metres away in three separate directions and we also had to secure permission from two separate landowners to bury the cabling and pipework. We had to work very closely with not only the client but also the local conservation officers and English Heritage to secure the new planning permission, which in turn added a further floor and an extra 1000 sq. ft of living space.
Many developers and contractors admired this beautiful derelict barn but thought the cost and complexity of work involved outweighed what it would ever be worth. We disagreed and to date this is not only one of our favourite projects but also the most profitable for our client.
